Elizabeth Adams

Multidisciplinary Designer

About Me -
I specialize in digital design with a focus on research, product ideation, product development, and abstract conceptualization. Solutions are presented through story telling.

Meticulousness is what guides my design process. Curiosity and keen observation fuel my ability to ask pivotal questions, establishing a framework that guides research, informs inquiries, and helps iterate solutions. My ingenuity is formed through problem solving, and the use of digital and analogous methods.

I am inspired by what it means to be an “experiencer” and am deeply passionate about understanding how we, as individuals, experience both the built and natural world. As well as the intricate connections between people and their environment. I am interested to extend the realms of movement, human interaction with dynamic forces, art, expression and communication in which ever form this takes.

1. Summer Concert Series Koozie
Softgood Freelance Graphic Design

For-
Sandy Amphitheater’s  25th Anniversary concert series & POSTFONTAINE

Medium-
Mixed(Pen & Marker)and Digital Art
4”x6”

Intention:

Sandy Ampitheatre celebrated their 25th anniversary with a new logo design. Working with POSTFONTAINE and given whimsical creative liberty, a graphic was created to represent their summer venues atmosphere and live music.

2. Catalina Kelp Forest Mural
Designer in Residence

For-
Catalina Environmental Leadership Program & Catalina Island Camps
2023-2024

Medium-
Acrylic on Wood, 4’x 22”

Description:
In an effort to beautify and revive space an old mural exhausted by the sun gave way for a new one to take it’s place.
Intention:

Focused on the eco-system seen at Howland’s landing, so it can be used to inspire and educate about the different animal and plant life surrounding Catalina Island. The beauty of this project lies within community, the duration of the project, the surrounding environment, observation of biological life in this marine protected area, research, and collaboration.

This effort became collaborative when additional help was needed. I would guide team members using their skills and marine science backgrounds to progress the mural forward, while taking in the staff members strengths in addition to maintaining the murals artistic style. The staff members were a key component for this mural to feel ephemeral. It created more unity and beauty.

3. Catalina Environmental Leadership Program(CELP) -Trail Map
Designer in Residence

For-
Catalina Environmental Leadership Program
2024

Medium-
Digital, Adobe Illustrator, Google Maps, topographic arial view, GPS tracker

Description-
Mapping the surrounding trails of Howland’s Landing for Catalina Environmental Leadership Program’s staff.
Intention:

If space can be organized simply

then staff can quickly understand their surroundings and seamlessly lead. The students experiences of the eco-system and natural world of Catalina Island can be better understood and viewed. Thus, improving the staffs and students experience, and connection to the natural world.

The data for this project was gathered by tracking mine and Christine Honan Simpsons(CELP program director) hiking/running trail progress with a GPS.

From various resources, Validity was gained through proper measurements of distance and space measured by a GPS. This information was then translated to Adobe Illustrator where I hand drew the trail lines to insure accuracy and clarity where technology lacked.

4. Catalina Island Camps
Designer in Residence & Graphic Design

For-
The Following Graphics were used for the likes of;
tshirts, mugs, hats, screen printing, and embroidery.

Medium-
Water color painting, pencil sketches/marker, Procreate, and Adobe Illustrator

Intention:

At the end of each summer graphics are necessary to commemorate an ephemeral experience that encompasses working at Catalina Island Camps that season. These artifacts are typically given as gifts and aim to build staff unity, even after the season is over.

5. Spatiality: A Language of Dance

This is a map for choreographers to record, dancers to learn, and the audience to understand.

For-
Choreographers, Dancers, and Audience members.

  • Choreographers can articulate, map, organize, and archive their work.
  • Dancers can learn new or old choreography from this Dance Language Score.
  • Audience members will better understand the complexity and technique of this artform.

Medium-
Adobe Illustrator, Rhino 3d, sheet music, vellum, a compass and dance photography, choreography of movement mapped on dancer Faith Y. Adams.

  • Please email with questions & to experience the expansive process/creation of such work.

Intention:

This is a technique and methodology of symbols to create a Dance Language. This method of recording produces a score, like that of a sheet of music.

Ballet is seldomly recorded through symbols. The symbols represent; stage markings, stage location, body placement and angles, positions, movement on an x,y, and z axis/plane, music notation, time, and transitional movement.
These forms are derived from the anatomy of a ballerinas form, as well as the French language which the positions in ballet were formalized in.

The Transitions forms were determined through the bodies archs of movement, and the ability to move through this gesticular sphere. For example if there is position A, and position B, what is the arch between those two points?

The symbols for Spatiality are directly from the marks on the studio floor, or of a stage. The direction the dancer faces is represented through a box. Figuratively it is taught that your body direction (or being angled a certain way) comes from your hips, which forms a square.

Music Notation covers a dancer’s and choreographer’s perspective of musical score, and how it is emphasized or represented within the body.

Layering all of these components creates the final score at the bottom of this image series.

  • Artistry?
  • This specific work is objective, leaving room for the subjective.

Artistry was purposefully left unmapped.
this is a personal choice and the dancer and/or choreographer are free to decide.

This personal form of self expression gaps liminal space forming connection, illiciting an...

  • emotional response, to a technical work.

Continuation: Through programing artificial intelligence to speak this language, it could then map this movement and create a score through the interpretation of videoed dance performances.

This project has the potential to standardize dance language, archive all Ballet’s, and to create a treasury of work. Ensuring the preservation of this artform.

6. Casper

For-
(the creation of);
A Typeface of the English Alphabet and Japanese Hiragana Alphabet.

Medium-
Digitizing and exemplifying analagous mixed media sketches/methods of creation.

The process-
was initiated by drawing sketches of the details within my room onto paper. I then digitized the physical print, and combined digital with analogous art. The art dictated the form of the letter.

Intention:

to create a font to portray the visual stimulus that I directly encountered and to have it embody a form. Then to transform that form into a written script. This visual stimuli I encountered were the trinkets, art, photos, environment, and Casper(my pet cat) that represent me personally. Gathering inspiration from my room made this project intrapersonal, directly defining myself in that moment.

7. Deconstruct to Reconstruct - The Anatomy of a Strawberry

For-
Deciphering a Natural System
What if nature was deconstructed, and abstracted into a idealized form?

Medium-

Graphic Illustration, Rhino 3d, Adobe Illustrator, Photography, and Photoshop

The 1st section analyzes each component of a strawberry. Answering the physical question through deconstruction of “What makes a strawberry a strawberry?”

The 2nd section pulls shapes from the deconstruction of the strawberries new form.

The 3rd section takes those abstract shapes and reforms them to re-create and abstracted form of a strawberry. Putting it back together in an arbituary manner.

The 4th section pulls from the findings from each previous form of the strawberry and aims to make nature mathematically perfect. What would a strawberry look like..

constructing a strawberry through inorganic methods to create perfection.

8. Plan of Salvation

For-
Fine Art Comission - member of a religious community

Medium-
Water colour, water soluable markers, pen, gold leafing, and digital art.
While living in Japan as a missionary I studied the Latter Day Saints teaching and biblical verses of the “Plan of Salvation”. It is a way of understanding life before and after death. To better understand this I painted this visual map for understanding and as a tool in lessons of those interested. Later I was asked to create a print of this piece. Only having an image from the original with some aspects missing I re-created it with additional digital art components, also making it one of it’s kind.

7. Tea for 2

For- Product development and design

People re-connecting to nature through a ritual of circularity. A guided psilocybin mushroom tea and mapping experience.

[Double click this image to open it in a new page]

Medium-
Rhino 3d, Shaper 3d, Sculpting, Carving, Metal Pouring, Watercolour, and 3d printing.

Caste iron teacup, 3d printed Teapot, and Terracotta clay wares, and a mushroom shaped bio-degradable mushroom capsule that dissapates in the hot water.

Intention:
  • I will facilitate a positive and impactful experience between human and Psilocybin Mushrooms. That re-generates/stimulates connection between the human and natural world.

A ritual -

Tea is a ritual; that takes time, is measurable, and ephemeral. This project commemorates/marks the envolvement with the Psilocybin mushroom by engaging all of the senses. It is a teaching experience, and followed with respect and routine.

Setting Intentions, Creating an Environment, being present...
A ritual is typically a deliberate action performed in a set sequence that reframes our emotional state, by curating an experience in a way that feels meaningful.

Through the engagement of the senses, measured by purposeful actions the human experience expands opening a persons ability to engage in a new form of learning from the entity of the mushroom.

To generate a balanced/respectful perspective of how humans are not on top, but within the natural world.

A genuine respect can be formed for what nature
can do for us/teach us, if we let it.
